The Tail End of Trouble: How Dr. Miranda Gave Dex a New Start Paw Print

Dr. Miranda Uses Co₂ Laser Technology With Precision To Free Dex From The Constant Pain Of His Screw Tail
The Tail End of Trouble: How Dr. Miranda Gave Dex a New Start

Dex is a lovable, cheeky bulldog with a personality larger than life. But when Dex wasn’t himself—constantly scooting and itching—it was heartbreaking to see him lose his sparkle.

Dr. Miranda has a professional interest in soft tissue surgery and surgical treatment of brachycephalic (bulldog) breeds. So, of course our friends at the VetLand Hospital & Emergency were quick to call in Dr. Miranda to assist with life changing surgery for Dex – removal of his bulldog corkscrew tail.

The Problem with Screw Tails

Screw tails, common in English and French Bulldogs, are quintessential bulldog charm. But did you know that little stump gets them into a world of trouble? They create deep skin folds – a paradise for bacteria & fungi, leading to endless infections, inflammation, and severe discomfort.

Vetland Veterinarian Dr. Vicky Assesses Dex’s Screw Tail Before Surgery, Revealing How Tightly The Twisted Tail Pressed Into His Skin, Causing Constant Pain And Irritation.

A Surgical Solution with a Laser Touch

Before surgery, Dex kicked off a complete health overhaul. With his family’s amazing support, Dex lost 8kg to prepare for surgery and a smoother recovery.

With their combined expertise, Dr. Miranda and Dr. Vicky mapped a CO₂ laser screw tail caudectomy. This delicate procedure involves amputating Dex’s painful tail stump and removing the surrounding infected skin folds without the use of sharp instruments and scalpels, only using a laser to vaporise tissue.

The laser seals blood vessels and minimises tissue trauma, meaning less bleeding, less swelling, and a smoother recovery for Dex.

Because the surgery site was so close to the spinal cord and important structures surrounding Dex’s bottom, precision must be exceptional.

Dex’s surgery was performed under general anaesthesia, with an epidural to keep his surgery site numb and comfortable when he came to from surgery.

Dr. Miranda also performs procedures at VetLand Hospital & Emergency for complex surgeries that require laser precision.
