Curious minds often lead to compassionate care—and that’s exactly what Nurse Rian brings to Lilydale Vet Centre. His lifelong fascination with animals, from dinosaurs to dogs, still drives the way he cares for every patient.
A Curiosity for the Animal Kingdom
Rian has always been fascinated by animals, especially the prehistoric giants that once ruled the earth. While palaeo-veterinary medicine sadly isn’t a real job, caring for today’s animals is a very close second.
He holds a Certificate III in Animal Studies and is currently studying Animal and Veterinary Biosciences at La Trobe University. Alongside his studies, he has spent much of his life safely capturing and releasing wildlife as a personal hobby.
The Science Behind Animal Health
One of Rian’s biggest interests in veterinary medicine is understanding diseases and pathogens. He enjoys learning how infections spread, how they affect the body, and how treatment can stop them.
For him, these complex medical puzzles are both fascinating and rewarding. Each case is an opportunity to better protect the health and well-being of the animals we love.
The Best Day of the Week? Thursdays.
While every day in the clinic is different, Thursdays hold a special place for Rian. That’s when he runs Lilydale’s Puppy Development Program.
Helping young puppies learn confidence, social skills, and positive experiences is incredibly rewarding. Watching those tiny personalities grow week by week makes the entire day feel worthwhile.
Life Outside the Clinic
When he’s not caring for patients, Rian stays active playing football or skateboarding. He also enjoys spending quality time with his fiancée, Shani.
At home, life is just as lively thanks to his animal crew. Angel, the Labrador mix, Koda, the Bull Arab, cats Loki and Mazikeen, and Seze, the bearded dragon, keep things interesting.
A Moment He’ll Never Forget
One patient Rian will always remember is a tiny dachshund named Tini. She arrived with serious neurological problems during one of his overnight shifts.
Rian hand-nursed her throughout the entire night. Despite everything she faced, her little tail kept wagging the whole time.
A Thought for Pet Parents
Rian shares a gentle reminder with every pet parent he meets. Your pet may only be part of your life, but for them, you are their whole world.
That perspective shapes the care he gives every day. And if you spot him in the clinic, feel free to say hello—he might just have a Raspberry Fanta in hand.
